Can doing good be a lever for business growth?

Business has a sustainability problem―and sustainability has a business problem. Prof. Sundar Bharadwaj’s research reveals how many companies have made social impact a core driver of growth. He shared his research on how corporations align their business objectives with positive social impact to build stronger brands and drive profitable growth. His book, "Good Growth: How Brands Win with Social Impact", provides a practical framework, grounded in research and case studies, on achieving it.Prof Bharadwaj shared the success stories of Coca-Cola, Unilever, Dove and Ariel during the lifelong learning session conducted for ISB alumnus at the Indian School of Business.

Coca-Cola partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to distribute vaccines using its vast African logistics network, turning supply chain reach into social value.
Unilever donated Vaseline to the Red Cross for use in refugee camps. In the process, they discovered from field medics that Vaseline was highly effective in treating heat-damaged skin. This insight led to product repositioning and more differentiated messaging, boosting commercial performance.
Dove uncovered that only 2% of women saw themselves as beautiful, due to unrealistic beauty standards imposed by the beauty industry, and men cared more about strength than beauty. In response, Dove launched campaigns that promoted self-esteem among women and positioned strength to care as a value for men. This deepened the emotional connection and helped them expand their market.

✅ Ariel solidified its position in the tough Indian market dominated by Surf by educating men to share the workload at home and teaching them how to wash clothes.

These enterprises aligned their resources, reach, and benevolent intentions for societal benefit; and in return, reaped deep dividends in terms of differentiation, expansion, and even disruption. Their marketing team didn’t sell products – they sold transformations. They understood that people buy to fulfil aspirations, not to acquire features. They understood that marketers are limited only their creativity and imagination.

So, they narrated emotionally resonant stories that connected with identity, values, and desired outcomes, positioning their offerings in ways that unlocked demand and loyalty.
